Wednesday 10th October 2018 is designated World Mental Health Day. Sligo Leitrim Mental Health Services, Mental Health Ireland, and a number of community and voluntary organisations will be hosting a range of interesting, informative and fun events in the coming weeks in Sligo and Leitrim to celebrate Mental Health Week.
The five ways to wellbeing, which will underpin mental health week, are simple, accessible and achievable for everyone:
Connect: Feeling close to and valued by other people is a fundamental human need. This week, try to do something different and make a connection. This could include phoning or meeting someone you care about for a proper catch up or asking how someone’s weekend was and really listen when they tell you.
Be Active: Activities such as walking, can have the added benefit of encouraging social interactions as well as provided some level of exercise. Find an exercise you enjoy and that suits your level of mobility.
Take notice: Taking notice of the world around you can directly enhance your wellbeing. Go for a walk and make a conscious effort to notice the landscape on your route or have a ‘clear the clutter’ day.
Keep learning: Continued learning through life enhances self-esteem and encourages social interaction and a more active life. Signing up for a night class or pursuing a new interest or hobby is a great way to boost your wellbeing.
Give: Participation in social and community life is strongly linked with improved wellbeing. Why not explore volunteering opportunities in Leitrim on www.volunteersligo.ie and register your interest.
A series of talks, events, workshops and fun activities, outlined below, will be held from the second week in October and will continue throughout the autumn to promote positive mental health in Sligo and Leitrim. Be sure to get involved and take part in these events.
Pop Up Mental Wellness Hub
Sligo Leitrim Mental Health Service will have a Pop Up Hub in Johnston Court Shopping Centre from 12pm – 3pm on Wednesday 10th October which is World Mental Health Day. There will be representatives from local services present on the day whom you are welcome to have a chat with and they will advise you where to go for further information or support. You are invited to take some positive mental health promotion materials to display in places where people gather or grab a free badge to wear and show you promote being open to talking about mental health. Come along if you are about Sligo town to show your support for World Mental Health Day.
The Healthy Mind
Manage your inner world and your outer world will transform – Talk by Mar Healy
Learning to understand and manage our minds is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves, opening to the possibility of a life with more calm, coping skills, emotional stability and mental wellness. In this 90 minute talk, you’ll get valuable insights into the workings of your mind, the unhelpful mental habits that can keep you stuck in negativity, stress, overwhelm, and self-criticism, and valuable techniques for rewiring your brain for peace and presence.
Mar is a professionally trained coach, meditation teacher, certified MBSR facilitator, and current acting area development officer for Mental Health Ireland in Sligo/Leitrim. The talk will be a warm, engaging mix of science meets humour, offering attendees some real wisdom for inner transformation.
This event is taking place on Tuesday, 23rd October in the Clayton Hotel in Sligo from 7pm – 8pm. Booking is essential.
Stress Control is a six session class. Each session lasts for 90 minutes (including a break). It teaches some great ways to prevent stress from becoming a problem or stopping it being a problem. Through published research, we know that the class works for people who already feel that stress is a problem and for those who feel they are coping at the moment and want to stay on top of stress in the future. Stress Control combines Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Positive Psychology and Mindfulness.
There are two, six week stress control courses beginning in Sligo later this month. The first will take place on Wednesday’s from 6.30pm – 8pm in room D1031 in I.T. Sligo beginning on 24th October. The second course will begin on Thursday, 25th October in St Molaise Gaels Clubhouse, Grange, also running from 6.30pm – 8pm. Booking is essential.
