Christy Keneally was the keynote speaker at a seminar in the Bush Hotel on 5th December which was focused on promoting positive mental health and suicide prevention in the Leitrim area. He encouraged organisations to work together on addressing the issue. Over 60 people attended the event, where over 20 organisations set up stands providing details of their services.
The seminar provided an opportunity for members of the public to access information on a variety of services and supports available. It also enabled service providers to exchange information and work more closely together in addressing this issue in the Leitrim area
Mike Rainsford, HSE Suicide Resource Officer and Rachel Reilly, Mental Health Ireland spoke about the factors which can lead to stress, depression and suicide and about working together to build community resilience. Michelle Fox, STOP Suicide spoke about the services provided by their organisation and about looking out for each other. Paul Hamilton, Education and Training Board spoke about the men’s shed projects which he has been involved in setting up around the county.
Feedback from participants at the event pointed to the need for more events like this in the wider community.
This seminar was the result of a partnership initiative between Leitrim Development Company, Mental Health Ireland and STOP Suicide. It was funded by Leitrim Development Company and Breffni Mental Health Association. The organisers would like to thank the speakers, the organisations who provided information, the Bush Hotel and everyone who attended the event.
